    Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing technology by means of which parts with a variety of thermoplastics (rigid, translucent or elastomer plastics) can be manufactured.

    It is an additive manufacturing technology that is used for the production of prototypes and the production of short series.

Fused deposition modeling is one of the best known, due to the fact that in parallel to professional machines, simpler and more economical options have appeared that are making it possible to make 3D printing known to a wider public sector.

    What is fused deposition modeling (FDM)?

    It is an additive manufacturing system where a computer-controlled extrusion head extrudes a thread of plastic material. In industrial machines, this process is produced in a chamber with controlled temperature and environment. In the most economical 3D printers, on the opposite, this control cannot be carried out in such an exhaustive way.

    How does fused deposition modeling (FDM) works?

    This type of modeling builds the pieces three-dimensionally by advancing a molten plastic thread through a computer-controlled extrusion head.

    The automated head produces two flat X and Y movements on a platform with vertical movement. The head performs the function of extruder, heating the filament of thermoplastic material, from which it is fed, until it melts. The deposition of the material on the base performs the construction of each section or layer of the piece. Each time a layer is completed, the table descends to continue with the next one.


    Depending on the shape of the object or piece to be manufactured, it is necessary to consider the need to build supports while the piece is built. These must be done in a way that allows them to be removed without excessive complications once the creation process is finished.

    Applications of fused deposition modeling (FDM)

    The fused deposition modeling (FDM) performed in professional machines facilitates the obtaining of quality pieces with final and approved materials. This additive technology is applied in sectors such as industry, medicine and aeronautics. These are some of its applications:

    • Models for dimensional and functional validation of product
    • Parts with approved material for aeronautics
    • Possibility of chromating ABS parts
    • Manufacture of short series (low volume manufacturing) of pieces
    • Manufacture of lower cost parts

    Advantages of fused deposition modeling (FDM)

    Some of its advantages are:

    • Wide variety of materials: ABS, ABS / PC, PC, PLA, PET, PA, materials mixed with fibers, with high performance
    • Ease of removing media
    • Absence of post curation
    • Possibility of manufacturing very large pieces without deformations
    • Possibility of combining materials during manufacturing

    Aspects to consider

    Some considerations regarding fused deposition modeling (FDM):

    • Construction speed lower than other technologies
    • It requires a good orientation of the piece for the generation of supports
    • It is not recommended to nest pieces one over the other during manufacturing
    • The temperature in the work area must be controlled
