What is Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)?
HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology is an advanced additive manufacturing (3D printing) process that uses a combination of fusing and detailing agents, heat and energy, to produce parts and components with exceptional precision and superior mechanical properties.
How does it work?
Starting from the 3D geometry, with the HP 3D printing preparation software, the file is loaded and prepared for printing, adjusting the orientation of the model, and the printing parameters are configured.
The powdered thermoplastic material that the HP Multi Jet Fusion uses as a base for printing is loaded into the build unit and then loaded into the printer.
The printing process begins by applying a thin and uniform layer of powder over the building area. Next, a fusing and detailing agent is applied defining the printing area of the layer.
After applying the fusing and detailing agent, an infrared light applies temperature fusing the defined printing areas in the powder layer, bonding the particles together and allowing them to solidify into the desired shape.
When the current layer fusion is complete, the process is repeated by applying a new layer of powder over the upper top, applying the fusing and detailing agent, and fusing the specific areas. This cycle is repeated layer by layer until the entire printed object is completed.
The construction chamber is then allowed to cool, or the cooling process is accelerated in a controlled manner, to subsequently continue with the extraction and cleaning of the unfused powder, eliminating excess material. Anything not used can be recycled and reused in future prints.
Depending on the design requirements and the end use of the printed object, some additional post-processing may be performed, such as sanding, fitting, painting, or coating.
Multi Jet Fusion Applications
HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology has a wide range of applications in various industries due to its unique characteristics and ability to produce high-precision and high-quality parts. Some of the most common applications of HP Multi Jet Fusion technology include:
Rapid prototyping and product development

Advantages of Multijet Fusion
Some of its advantages are:
High printing speed
Excellent dimensional resolution
Ability to print on a wide range of thermoplastic materials
Ability to produce parts with superior mechanical properties
Parts with excellent mechanical resistance
Finished surface that facilitates post-processing
Complete design freedom: no supports, dust supports the piece
Option to nest pieces (one inside another)
Material structure is “watertight” therefore, no need for post-processing surface treatment
Aspects to consider
Some considerations regarding this technology:
Limited building size compared to other technologies
Slightly rough surface appearance
Need for a cooling and cleaning process for parts
Possible deformations in very large pieces
Materials for Multi Jet Fusion
These are a few examples of the materials that can be used with HP Multi Jet Fusion technology. The choice of the appropriate material will depend on the specific characteristics and properties required for each application
PA12 |
